FREE – LIVE AT THE BBC

Released by Universal Music Catalogue on 18th September 2006 (cat no 9840662)

Complete surviving BBC recordings available for the first time, including tracks recently unearthed in Paul Kossoff’s personal archive

Marking the 30th anniversary of Paul Kossoff’s tragic death, the painstakingly compiled Free - Live at the BBC is an extraordinary album which brings together all the surviving BBC Sessions and Concerts on two discs, most of which have never been officially released and many of which have not even appeared on bootlegs and were found within Kossoff’s personal archive.

From their very first session in 1968 (represented here by ‘Waiting on You’) just months after they formed (and recorded just a few days after Andy Fraser’s 16th birthday), through to their last official recording for the beeb, In Concert for John Peel in July 1970, this compilation captures the rise of one of the UK’s most talented blues-rock bands.

Whilst some of the material has surfaced as bonus material on reissues, the bulk of it has never before been available; ‘Sugar For Mr Morrision’ (found amongst Paul Kossoff’s tapes) ‘Woman’, ‘I’ll Be Creepin’’ ‘Trouble On Double Time’ and ‘Mouthful of Grass’ In Session tracks and both the In Concert performances are officially released here for the first time. The December 1969 session for Top Gear didn’t even made it to bootleg, and was found recently in Paul Kossof’s private archive.

Whilst some of the songs featured in this release comes from the original masters from the BBC many of the recordings were recorded over by the beeb at the time, and as a result much of the remaining material has been collated from fan’s recordings of the original broadcasts, and some were even recently discovered in Paul Kossoff’s personal collection.

In order to put together a complete collection, some of the material that appears on the album is of less-than-perfect quality, but nevertheless represents the most comprehensive collection ever released. As David Clayton says in his sleevenotes, Paul Kossoff had a habit of recording song ideas over any tape that was to hand. As a result, the recording of Mr Big from the Top Gear session of December 1969 has been lost, and the start of ‘I’ll be Creeping’ was clipped by Kossoff, which is why the track fades in a few seconds into the song.

Comments by Lucy

It's cool  to see this show available Free on the John Peel show July 2nd 1970.  This is one of the radio shows I attended, and I remember it all so well.

I was sitting in the audience just watching people arrive at the studio in Regents Street.   About 30 mins before the recording started I had decieded to go back stage

It was easy back then, I just walked up some stairs as the side of the stage where a double door was and walked in.  I then saw another door on the right. Here I could hear little voices behind the door, so I knocked on the door, and someone said " Yeh Come in"  In I walked and the band were sitting around the room talking - playing music, etc. I asked them

if it was possible to take a few photos, they said Yeh of course, and they all started posing for me, very relaxed atmosphere too. We also talked about the photos

and told them I would be taking photos next Sunday at their next gig, I remember Simon saying, well we didn't even know were playin' then... and laughed.

After sometime a red light started to flash in the room, which meant it was time for the band to go on the stage.

I said Thanks you to the band and headed out of the room.  Back to the corridor and the double doors.  Well this was the funniest part. I opened the double doors and of course it led back on to the stage, As I opened it people started to applaud thinking I was leading the band, it sure made my face go red.  When it was played back live on the radio days later, all this was heard in the recording  where moments before the band came out, people started to clap, well this was me coming out the double door,  What a scream that was...... The Answer are four lads hailing from Downpatrick in Northern Ireland.

Raised on a heady diet of Led Zeppelin, Free, The Who and The Black Crowes, The Answer’s contemporary take of bluesy, riff heavy hard rock is starting to turn heads especially with the recent release of their debut EP ‘Keep Believin’’ in July 2005. This has has helped secure them a place on the forthcoming "New School Of Rock Tour" this autumn alongside The Sound Explosion and Tokyo Dragons.

The Darkness and Alter Bridge have already lent their praise by asking them to support them on their winter tour of 2004. At a recent London gig none other than Jimmy Page stood and watched their set from side of stage and they’ve already played at a Phil Lynott memorial benefit gig in Dublin as Lynott’s mother is a big fan. So big in fact that she allowed Mahon to be the first since Lynott’s death to open his bass case and play the revered black iconic bass axe! It’s the same black bass that appears in the video to ‘Keep Believin’’.

The Answer will be special guests at the Royal Albert Hall !! :-))

Hot New Artist !!!!

Check out this very cool singer/songwriter

BRIAN WILTSEY

One of Atlanta's most buzz-worthy artists has release his new album Rain and Flies and it is already said to be Brian Wiltsey's best work to date. Wanting to write more band oriented songs this time around, this album definitely rocks more than his previous projects. Already known for his dynamic, soulful voice, it just gets stronger and stronger with each album.

Rain and Flies starts off with a darker love song called "On My Own" with a great line in the chorus, "On my own I will fake it through the night, there is so much more to tell you but nothing left to say, I'll just be on my way."

The album takes many turns and dynamic changes with the song moods describing the lighter and darker moments of relationships it finally finishes on a bittersweet anthem entitled "Tomorrow Can Wait". Here, Brian, sets the scene as the last night on earth with the person you love. The final words you hear are "Goodnight my love, goodnight". It's a very cool ending to a fine bunch of songs.

The first single is "You Make It Better". This song has already been recorded a few different ways. The new album version takes a darker, more british sounding approach that brings a stronger and emotional mood to the song that it lacked before.

Brian is currently putting together a summer/fall tour to promote the album. If his live shows are any indication, Brian Wiltsey is going places.

If you buy his cd on line, I am 100% sure it wont come out your cd player !!!!

Blues and Rock had a baby and thats what we play says the bands frontman Kurtis Dengler.

Their music has been featured several times on 92.9 FM, KISMs Locals Only in 2005 & '06. This year they are touring the northwest and playing gigs such as the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival, Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Festival, and are ending the tour with Bumbershoot.

ESB recently signed with veteran manager Chris Crawford who states "These guys are my favorite band next to long time friend and client Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, Free, and currently fronting Queen + Paul Rodgers.
